Recently, the commercial UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) industry has witnessed two remarkable applications: enhancing wildfire response efforts in California and assisting in the management of bear populations in Montana.

DFR – A Revolutionary Tool in Firefighting

The San Bernardino County Fire Department has officially integrated the Drones as First Responder (DFR) program into its emergency response operations, significantly reducing reaction times in crisis situations. Inspired by the successful implementation of the DFR initiative by the Chula Vista Police Department, this new system enables fire crews to pinpoint fire locations with precision and deploy drones instantly.

According to San Bernardino Sun, upon receiving a fire report, along with dispatching fire trucks, a UAV capable of reaching speeds of 40 mph is deployed to the scene within seconds. In many cases, drones are sent independently for reconnaissance, providing live aerial imagery that allows firefighters to assess the situation before taking action.

Looking ahead, San Bernardino officials are planning to upgrade the system with search-and-rescue robots to navigate collapsed buildings and underwater drones to investigate rivers and lakes. The integration of UAVs with these cutting-edge technologies is expected to significantly enhance response efficiency and rescue operations in emergency scenarios.

Drone-Assisted Bear Population Management – A Groundbreaking Approach

In the field of wildlife conservation, drones are also proving to be an indispensable tool. Wesley Sarmento, a bear management specialist at Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks, detailed in the journal Frontiers how UAVs have revolutionized efforts to control bear movements and prevent human-wildlife conflicts.

Through a strategy known as “hazing with drones,” Sarmento employs highly maneuverable UAVs equipped with sound-emitting capabilities to deter bears precisely and effectively without posing any direct threat. Notably, the drones are fitted with thermal imaging cameras, allowing for the identification of bear locations even at night—a task nearly impossible using traditional methods.

“I can safely drive bears away from residential areas and guide them toward safer habitats from the security of my vehicle,” Sarmento explained. This technological advancement not only mitigates risks for human populations but also safeguards wildlife from unnecessary encounters.
